"YOU are your OWN first response."
The following are some suggestions of where you could start...
1. Email sylmarhsc@gmail.com and ask them to add you to their newsletter mailing list.
2. Fill out "Ward Emergency Inventory Survey" ASAP and send info to castaicprep@gmail.com.
3. Create or update your 72-hr kit and car emergency kit. Include items for warmth.
4. Secure items in your home. Strap down your water heater. Secure breakable & glass items. Find a way to lock cabinets. Secure bookcases and large furniture pieces so they won't fall over. Put closed-toe shoes next to your bed. Make sure you have the tools accessible that you'd need to shut off utilities. Locate where utility shut offs are located.
5. Study content in the emergency prep binder to know how to react to various emergencies.
6. Gather, organize and secure your important documents/valuables. Make sure you have proper insurance coverage.
7. Create an evacuation plan which accounts for various emergency scenarios: daytime vs. nighttime; everyone home vs. everyone at work; communicating without wifi/cell service, etc.
8. Create a hardcopy of your contacts, especially emergency contacts. Fill out the Emergency First Aid Financial Kit (EFFAK) Booklet found in the Financial Preparedness Tab.
9. Think about what information you would need if the internet and cell service aren't working. Would you have access to information to know how to handle first aid and medical emergencies? Would you have the addresses of friends and family that you need to check on or travel to? Maps of various routes? Try to not let your gas tanks get below half full before filling up. All it takes is no power for the pumps to stop working.
10. Learn how to acquire and use your food storage in a way that suits your family's needs. It can ultimately save you money and will most likely improve your health if you do it right. Please store water in a proper manner. See Food & Water Storage Tab for more info.
